I wanted to do another garden update before the end of July, and I just barely managed to squeeze this one in. I can’t believe it’s already August tomorrow. How did that happen?
My biggest thing right now is that I’m having a major problem with my tomatoes. Granted, I almost always have something wrong with my tomatoes, but I’ve learned to manage the most common issues over the years. The usual blight set in earlier this month, but something new has been happening and I cannot seem to figure it out. The leaves and branches are weakening and eventually dying off on several of my plants. Oddly, it seems to be happening to the green varieties the most, and I can’t decide if that’s just coincidence or not. I already totally lost a Big Zebra, my Green Zebra is on it’s way out, Aunt Ruby’s German Green is right behind it, and I’m just starting to see signs on my Evergreen. What’s up?
I’ve been researching and asking around and no one seems to really have an answer. Some suggested the heat, but that doesn’t really add up. I live on an island that doesn’t get nearly as hot as the mainland, and even still, it’s not like we’ve had triple digit temperatures or anything. We’ve had a few days creep into the 90’s, but since when have tomatoes been sensitive to mid-80 to low-90 degree weather? It’s been no hotter here than it’s been in years past. They’ve been receiving plenty of water (and no, not too much) and regular feedings. I’m stumped.
Someone mentioned nematodes, and they are the only thing that makes even a little bit of sense right now. I didn’t know what a nematode was, so I had to look it up, and I’ll make you do the same thing (if you’re brave). They’re really nasty, and the mere thought of them gives me the willies, and for the record, they are absolutely nothing like a toad, which is what I pictured in the first place. I have to wait to pull up the roots on one of them to see for sure, and I’m praying that it’s not nematodes, as it sounds like they’re pretty awful to deal with. But on the other hand, it would be nice to just know. What do you guys think?
The rest of the garden is doing just fine, but to be honest, all I really care about is the tomatoes. I’m harvesting tons of cukes, still bringing in plenty of beets and carrots, and my garlic harvest was awesome. I just started harvesting my late planting of zucchini and have discovered that the “mystery squash” I found growing amongst my beets is actually a butternut. Yay! Watermelon and cantaloupe are doing their thing, and I have no idea if I’ll get any fruit, but I’m willing to wait it out to see.
Tomatillos are coming in like gangbusters. We will be making a lot of salsa verde this year, no doubt. Herbs are doing well, and the rhubarb is HUGE. Are you sure I can’t harvest any this year?? The rest of the garden is an overgrown jungle that needs to have some serious work done to it if I want to do a fall planting, as I say I’m going to every year. I need to get on it, because it’s already August and time to plant is dwindling. Sheesh. Where has the summer gone??
I’m seeing lots of little white butterflies in the air, which means the pesky green cruciferous-loving caterpillars are not far behind. I need to get out there with the neem oil soon, especially if I want to have greens and brussels sprouts to harvest in the fall. It looks like I’ve got my work cut out for me this week, so I’m off to go get started. J/K, not really, I have a baby shower to go to. Story of my life.
If you have any suggestions about my tomatoes, I’m ALL EARS! Please and thank you.
